Cell Mapping Challenges



  • Develop criteria to define each type of cell (e.g. what makes the plethora of renal cell types distinct from non-renal cells?), and then identify all the different cell types in the kidney.
  • Determine the function and role of each cell type, including non-resident renal cells such as macrophages, eosinophils and lymphocytes.
  • Understand the developmental processes of each cell subtype, including specification of renal cell subtypes (e.g. what are the transcriptional regulators that lead to the formation of different cell subtypes in the different tubules, interstitium, glomeruli, and vasculature.
  • Understand the migration of the various cell types of the kidney (endothelial cells, epithelial cells, fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells) during the multi-phasic steps of kidney development (tubular segment differentiation, glomerular formation and neural and vascular supply).
